Space travel is not just the last frontier of tourism. After the space race of the billionaires, Bezos against Musk, even the world of TV senses the business and gears up. In the next few years, two reality shows in zero gravity could arrive on our screens. No video controlled houses or deserted islands, but a training center with real astronauts as consultants. The goal: to see who among the challengers has what it takes to leave the earth for the ISS. Two competing formats compete in the first space reality show. Who wants to be an astronaut (Who wants to be an astronaut), already in the process of closing agreements with the Discovery Channel, and Space Hero, which is still looking for a network. The first format is based in the most classic way on the archetypes of the reality show. On Earth, competitors will compete to secure a fully paid-for place on the International Space Station for eight days. They will face a number of as-yet unspecified extreme challenges, which will likely encompass the basis of training a real astronaut. Axiom Space has been hired (although it is not yet confirmed) for transport to the ISS, and ex astronaut Mike Massimino will be the consultant of exception. Massimino is no stranger to TV appearances. In 2009, while on a mission to repair the Hubble telescope, he filmed images for a dedicated documentary in person with IMAX cameras, and says: “Part of our training is also this: knowing how to film what happens in space to share it with the rest of the world. “The crew will have to adapt to the narrow spaces of the ISS and invent new ways to document life in the orbiting station, but Massimino said he was confident in a future in which people capable of giving an added value by managing the shooting with the right technical skills. If Who wants to be an astronaut is all Made in the USA, Space Hero has a much more international air. His plan is to start with 24 competitors from all over the world, equally divided not only between men and women, but also between developed and developing countries. These 24 aspiring astronauts will be staying in a Big Brother-style Space Village for the purpose of training for space travel. And as the race goes on and competitors dwindle, the public vote will also weigh in, paving the way for massive popular involvement. “Nigeria, with 200 million inhabitants, has never had an astronaut” explain the producers “and the last Indian astronaut dates back to 1985”. Although the production of the two shows has announced that it has already made agreements with the various space agencies, there are still many obstacles, and they are more bureaucratic than technical. NASA seems to agree in expanding the uses of the ISS beyond the purely research side, but many knots remain to be solved, first of all the vector that will be able to transport aspiring astronauts into space. In the meantime, Who wants to be an astronaut has opened the candidature on its website, and Space Hero has announced that it will open its next December 21st.
