33.3 million Italians bought online in the last quarter, +9.6 million compared to the pre-pandemic period, with a trend that projects growth of + 14% for 2022 for a value of 45.9 billion. EUR. With these results, the online penetration of total retail purchases (products and services) in 2022 should exceed 11%. This is indicated by the latest survey by the eCommerce B2C Netcomm Observatory – School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano, which highlights how product purchases mark a + 10% compared to 2021 and reach 40 billion, while services are worth 11.9 billion (+ 28% compared to 2021) thanks to the signs of recovery already highlighted last year. Among the products, the more mature sectors slow down their growth path (Clothing with + 10% compared to 2021 and IT & Consumer electronics with + 7%), while Food & Grocery is confirmed as the most dynamic sector also in 2022, with growth + 17% year on year. As for the services market, albeit still far from the 2019 value, it grows thanks to the encouraging results of Tourism and transport (+ 33%) and Other services (+ 35%), thanks to the very positive performance of Ticketing for events. Purchases with digital payment systems prevail at the time of the order (almost 90%), while the use of cash or bank transfer is decreasing, both online and in physical stores. The smartphone is confirmed as the preferred device for shopping online: in 2022, 55% (in line with last year) of the eCommerce value passes through this channel. “We have now gone far beyond the meaning of eCommerce as’ online shopping ‘.
