Wine, Mediobanca-Sace: in 2021 a recovery of 3.5% thanks to a boost in exports

Italian wine up by 3.5% in 2021 (-4.1% in 2020), thanks to the boost of exports in the main international markets (consumption at + 3.8% per year in 21-22). Best growth potential in China (+ 6.3% annually), Canada and Japan (+ 5.9% annually). This is what emerges from the first joint report on the Italian wine & spirits sector of the Mediobanca Research Area, the Studies Office of Sace and Ipsos, dedicated to the analysis of domestic and international markets and the study of socio-cultural dynamics of consumption and presented today. For the two major importers of Italian wine, the average annual growth is 2% for the USA and 3.1% for Germany. In Switzerland, wine consumption is expected to be stable. A separate speech for the United Kingdom: growth of 2.4% a year, but prospects complicated by post-Brexit developments. Opportunities can come from markets that are already known to Italian wine: Canada and Japan show a strong growth in consumption (+ 5.9% per year for both). But it is China that shows one of the greatest potential with an annual + 6.3% in the two-year period 2021-22. A curiosity: Vietnam, a market that is still very small, but which has a significant growth in consumption (+ 9.6%), also thanks to trade agreements with the EU that protect geographical indications and reduce tariffs and duties. Italian exports of wines and spirits are worth 30% of our cross-border food and beverage sales and amount to € 7.8 billion in 2020.
