In 2020 gaming spending -33.5%, risks of ‘transfer’ of illegal channels

Despite growth in online gaming, overall spending fell by 33.5% in 2020, with potential risks of transfer to illegal gaming channels. This is what emerges from the report edited by the Luiss business school and Ipsos ‘The game in Italy, between legality and illegality’. Particularly hit was the physical game channel, whose spending fell by 41.7%. 75% of the decrease in spending on this channel was determined by the net downsizing of spending in awp and vlt, which amounted to 4.8 billion euros in 2020 against 10.3 billion euros in 2019. In sharp decline also spending on sports, virtual and horse racing betting which reported a decrease of 453 million euros, equivalent to a reduction of 36% compared to 2019. The drop in spending in the Lottery, Lotto and Superenalotto and Bingo which decreased by 1 billion (-19%) and 237 million (-53%) respectively.
