War in Ukraine, Altroconsumo: “Italians fear a drop in food products in supermarkets”

Among the less available basic necessities that are starting to be missing on the shelves of supermarkets at risk are first of all sunflower oil (missing in 20% of cases), corn oil (15%) and white flour. This was pointed out by Altroconsumo who also photographed how the trend in prices began to increase already before the war in Ukraine while the conflict has not yet had a real impact on this situation. These, explains Altroconsumo, “are the products that are feared the most lack as they are talked about a lot in relation to the conflict”, actually, “as regards corn and sunflower oil, we still have stocks, while , as far as white flour is concerned, Italian imports from Russia and Ukraine are really small and have little impact “. The most serious consequences of the war, Altroconsumo analysts underline, “are spilling over to the decrease in the availability of basic necessities in supermarkets, mainly caused by the fear of not being able to find them due to supply limits linked to the conflict zones”. However, “a false perception is developing on some categories leading to an unjustified increase in consumer concern and consequent unnecessary behavior”. As shown by a recent Altroconsumo survey, “50-60% of respondents believe and fear that there is already less availability of products on supermarket shelves. The impact of the conflict has not yet reached this point”.
