Asstra, LPT demand contraction up to 90%

In the last two years, the Covid-19 emergency has drastically changed the mobility habits of Italians, causing a contraction in demand for collective transport up to over 90% compared to normal values during the lockdown (the modal share has halved from 10.8% to 5.4%) and a loss of traffic revenues of 2.2 billion euros in 2020 and around 2 billion euros for 2021, according to Asstra’s ‘Position Paper’ , presented at the ‘Next Generation Mobility’ conference. However, public transport companies have shown great flexibility and resilience to the pandemic shock, redesigning the offer of mobility services in a short time, increasing the number of trips, reshaping schedules and providing extraordinary shifts in full compliance with the obligations of safety. In the near future, the consolidation and affirmation of a new system of local mobility will have to start with a rethinking of urban spaces to “bring the person back to the center.” The affirmation of new habits of work, study and consumption – today a quarter of Italians work in smart working every day or almost every day and about 17% occasionally and systematic trips are reduced (the use of public transport for study or work trips went from 27.3% before the pandemic to 22 , 6%) – will ensure that in the short term the demand for mobility by travelers and commuters will continue to settle at lower levels than in 2019, and then rise again starting from 2023.
