BRATISLAVA. The Nobel Prize for Literature was announced in Stockholm – it was won by Abdulrazak Gurnah (1948), a writer originally from Zanzibar, writing in English. His native language was Swahili, but it was not until his English texts became literature in the full sense of the word.

He moved to Great Britain in 1968 as a student. It was natural for him to react to the consequences of colonialism in Africa and to pay very vivid attention to the fate of immigrants, the clash of cultures at the border of the two worlds.

He made a name for himself in 1994 with the novel Raj.

The decision confirmed that the key to the Commission’s decision from the Swedish Academy was practically non-existent. His name did not figure among the writers who mentioned it before the award was announced.

There has long been a disparity between European and American writers on the one hand, and Asian and African on the other. The same is true for women and men and younger and older authors.
