BRATISLAVA, KOŠICE. Accused Štefan Žiga, a family member of the former Minister of Economy Petra Žigu (formerly Smer, now Hlas), handed over bribes in the amount of 175 thousand euros, according to the police and the prosecutor’s office.

He allegedly handed them over from 2016 to 2020 to the former head of the National Financial Police Unit of the National Criminal Agency (NAKA), Bernard Slobodník, but also to the former head of the Criminal Office of the Financial Administration, Ľudovít Makó.

This follows from the resolution of the Specialized Criminal Court on the arrest of the accused.

On September 25, Judge for the Preliminary Procedure Ján Hrubala placed Štefan Žiga in the Košice Detention Center for collusion and preventive reasons. He is charged with the continuing crime of bribery.

Ľudovít Makó was allegedly accused in 2018 in Bratislava restaurant handed over a bribe of 70,000 euros in an envelope “for being, by virtue of his position, helpful in terms of issues and competencies of the Financial Administration in tax cases that were to concern food chains with confectionery,” the resolution states that Štefan Žiga handed over bribes in the total amount of at least 175 thousand euros.

In the order, Judge Ján Hrubala assessed that the facts found so far indicate that the acts for which criminal proceedings have been instituted and the charges brought should have been committed and that there is a sufficient reasonable presumption that the accused committed these acts.

According to the judge, the witness statements are in agreement with the content, they overlap and support each other.

In his statement, the accused denies committing the acts he is accused of.

Hrubala added that the justification of collusive detention in the accused is given by the very nature of the prosecuted crime.

“For the accused, the risk of his collusive behavior is exacerbated by the fact that the criminal activity, which is blamed on him at this stage of the proceedings, is clearly collusive in nature. This means that this is an activity whose essence was to influence the criminal proceedings in which the accused acted as a suspect, “the judge explained, adding that the accused also has a number of personal contacts with former, but especially with current NAKA members.

He went on to say that it was therefore highly probable that leaving Štefan Žiga at large would frustrate his investigation.

The judge also thought that, in particular, the number of acts accused by Štefan Žig justified the accused’s fear that he would continue his crime.

Štefan Žiga is the son of the deputy cousin.

Former Minister Peter Žiga is also accused of corruption, but he is being prosecuted at large.
