Briola (Avis): “Blood donations are often the only life-saving therapy”

“Blood donations for oncohematological patients are essential and often become one of the pre-eminent therapies in their care. For this reason I believe that the memorandum of understanding signed last year between Ail and Avis is an absolutely natural combination. Ail addresses cannot be cured and treated without blood donations. Similarly, the task of our volunteers is not limited to the donation of blood and plasma, but together with other patient associations we act on what are the needs of the sick “. Thus Gianpietro Briola, president of national Avis, during his speech at the AIL (Italian Association against leukemia-lymphomas and myeloma) conference on the third sector, entitled ‘To cure is to take care. Ail’s mission for healthcare on a human scale ‘, scheduled in Rome until 2 October at the Coni Hall of Honor. “The blood donation system for all patients admitted to our hospitals is fundamental and essential, I would say irreplaceable – highlighted the number one of the Italian Volunteers Association of the blood – Red blood cells, plasma and platelets not only cannot be produced in the laboratory, but for many patients they often represent the only life-saving therapy in case of emergency, of acute pathologies, or they improve the quality of life of chronic patients, I am thinking for example of thalassemics. For these reasons, I believe that strengthening and restoring centrality to transfusion service in Italy is essential because without blood there could be no continuity of care for patients “.
