iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max: 120 Hz does not work on third-party apps, and you can’t help it – Frandroid

9to5Mac and several developers have discovered a ProMotion bug on the third-party applications of the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max: 120 Hz would not work on the animations of the apps. Two solutions will be implemented to correct the situation.

During his September keynote, Apple introduced its new generation of iPhone. And among the big novelties awaited for many years, the adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz, named ProMotion. Democratized on all high-end Android smartphones, this function is here exclusive to iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max.

ProMotion allows you to navigate an application with extreme fluidity, especially when scrolling through a news feed, for example. Since it is adaptive, this frequency decreases or increases according to your current uses. On a static page, 10 Hz will be privileged. This saves battery power.

No 120 Hz for animations

Problem: Several sources report a ProMotion bug that prevents third-party applications from fully exploiting the benefits of this tool. 9to5Mac and Christian Selig, the developer of Apollo Reddit, notably highlighted this anomaly, which more particularly concerns the animations of applications.

On the one hand, scrolling a third-party app benefits 100% of 120 Hz, but on the other hand, interaction experiences are deprived of it. These complications are obviously nothing normal, which pushes the Cupertino giant to work on solutions. In total, two technical responses were submitted by the group.

As a first step, Apple invites developers to update their applications by indicating in a Plist file – a file that contains an application’s preferences and a list of properties and parameters – that they are indeed relying on ProMotion and adaptive 120 Hz.

An update to come

Except that in some cases, as noted The Verge, the problem directly concerns the Core Animation technology, which allows you to create animated interfaces for iPhone, among others. A bug unearthed by the brand’s teams must therefore be resolved in a future software update, without Apple specifying a date.

This is not the first technical glitch that Apple has faced since the launch of its iPhone 13.
