The Taliban militant movement will impose harsh punishments in Afghanistan, including executions or the cutting off of hands for theft. This was confirmed to the AP agency in an interview by one of the representatives of the Islamist group Núrruddín Turábí. According to him, such punishments are necessary for the fight against crime. According to him, the Taliban has not yet decided whether to execute in public.

“Everyone criticized us for (public) executions in stadiums, but we never dreamed of criticizing criminal laws abroad. ‘No one will show us what laws we should have. We will follow the teachings of Islam and our law will be based on the Qur’an, “said Turabi.

Shortly after taking power in Afghanistan, the Taliban announced that it would reintroduce Islamic Sharia law in the country. It includes harsh punishments such as flogging, cutting off limbs and executions.

The Taliban ruled hard in Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. During this period, the convicted murderers were publicly executed by a single shot in the head, usually carried out by the victim’s family member. The family had the opportunity to let the culprit live, in which case they received financial compensation, which the Taliban called “bloody money.”

For convicted thieves, the traditional punishment was to cut off a hand. If the robbery was carried out on the road or highway, the offender’s arm and leg were amputated. Turabi defended these punishments in an interview with the AP. Nevertheless, he claims that the Taliban has changed.

“We have changed. We allow the use of TVs and mobile phones. People can also take photos and shoot videos, “says Turábí, according to which they could allow citizens to shoot executions or cut off limbs and spread them on social networks. According to him, this would have a positive effect in terms of discouraging people from committing crimes.
