Star Wars: the incredible rant of the editor Marcia Lucas, ex-wife of George Lucas

Editor Marcia Lucas, ex-wife of George Lucas, famous for her memorable work on the original “Star Wars” trilogy, recently gave her thoughts on the latest episodes. And the least we can say is that she did not mince words.

Marcia Lucas, principal editor of the original Star Wars trilogy – but also of memorable feature films such as Taxi Driver or American Graffiti – recently spoke about the latest episodes of the famous saga.

The ex-wife of George Lucas, known to have often played the co-pilots with her husband when the latter tried to carry out his pharaminous project in 1977, is still considered by many today as “the woman who saved Star Wars”, infusing the franchise’s very first film with the emotion it still lacked.

In the foreword of the book Howard Kazanjian: A Producer’s Life, she was therefore able to give her opinion on the recent postlogy and on the work carried out by Kathleen Kennedy at the head of Lucasfilm. After clarifying how much affection she had always had for the producer, Marcia Lucas expressed her disappointment with the recent legacy of the Star Wars saga:

“Now that she’s running Lucasfilm and making films, it seems to me that Kathleen Kennedy, just like JJ Abrams, has no idea what Star Wars is.”, she explained. “They do not understand. (…) When I saw this movie where they kill Han Solo, I was furious. I was furious when they killed Han Solo. It made absolutely, absolutely no sense, no valid reason. I thought, ‘You haven’t understood the story of the Jedi. You did not understand the magic of Star Wars. Are you getting rid of Han Solo? ‘”

Lucasfilm Ltd.

The fate reserved for the famous smuggler played by Harrison Ford in episode VII is not the only reason for Marcia Lucas, who also laments what happens to Luke in Episode VIII:

“And then at the end of the last one, The Last Jedi, they disintegrate Luke”, she continues. “They killed Han Solo. They killed Luke Skywalker. And they don’t have Princess Leia anymore. And they spit out movies every year. They think it’s important to attract a female audience, so now their main character is a woman who is supposed to have Jedi powers. But it is not known where she got those powers, or who she is. It sucks. The stories are horrible. Simply horrible. Horrible. “

Marcia Lucas, who had also not been very tender with the prelogy directed by George Lucas from 1999, is therefore categorical about the last feature films of the saga, even if she does not seem to mention episode IX , The Rise of Skywalker, released in December 2019 and in which information about Rey’s past is brought to the viewer.
