Bad weather in the Gard and Hérault: an update on the forecasts for this Wednesday afternoon – Midi Libre

The rain fell again, at the very beginning of the afternoon, on the center of Gard, without taking a stormy and torrential turn for the time being. Météo France, in its latest bulletin, is however expecting the 80 to 100 mm announced from Tuesday afternoon, or even more, first in the east of the Hérault then in the Gard. Corn “the risk of an event similar to yesterday’s now seems very low”, estimates the agency.

Two departments of Occitanie in orange vigilance

On Météo France’s forecast map, this Wednesday afternoon, the sky is streaked with lightning from Périgueux to Tarbes and Nîmes, a huge triangle of around fifteen departments. However, only eight are at this hour in orange vigilance. Six in the Rhône-Alpes region, two in Occitanie: Hérault and Gard.

The risk of rain up to 150 mm locally remains

The forecaster has not changed since Tuesday afternoon: “Strong rainfall in the order of 80 to 100 mm in a short time” are expected, “accumulations over the episode can locally reach 100 to 150 mm” , accompanied by a “risk of hail and strong gusts of wind”. For the moment, no more than 15 mm of precipitation has been recorded in the Cévennes in the late morning, up to 30 mm in the center of the department, when strong showers fell at the very beginning of the afternoon.

Like a second wave on Wednesday, Météo France announced possible thunderstorms from 3 p.m. on the west of the Hérault, Agde and Béziers, sliding towards Montpellier and the Gard. The east of the Hérault was the most affected at the start of the event, then the heaviest precipitation should shift to the Gard. At 4 p.m., the forecaster indicates that “the risk of stationary thunderstorms is fading over the Hérault while it remains significant on the Gard plains until the end of the afternoon”. “In the evening and the first part of the night from Wednesday to Thursday, new thunderstorms circulate rapidly over these departments”, they will not present a stationary character similar to that of Tuesday either.

For the moment, if it rains it is only very locally and of low intensity, but the call for vigilance remains in order: “The convergence of low layer and the forcing of altitude persist”, explains the regional branch of Météo France, in Aix-en-Provence. The episode would not go away until 1 a.m. to 2 a.m., according to the latest forecasting models.
