Endesa reactivates the As Pontes thermal power plant to produce energy

The company has put one of its two available groups into operation The contracts with the auxiliaries have been extended until June 2023 A ship with coal has already arrived and the arrival of another with 160,000 tons is planned Endesa will once again burn coal in As Pontes (A Coruña) to produce energy. The company has reactivated the thermal power plant it has in this municipality first thing this Wednesday morning, with the start-up of one of its two available groups. According to the director of this plant, Ignacio Sáinz, “group one has already entered into operation and group two is in the process of being reviewed in order to reactivate it at the beginning of 2023”. This has motivated the company to increase the plant’s average workforce to about 60 people. In addition, the contracts of the auxiliary companies have been extended until June 2023. Another 160,000 tons of coal will arrive As for coal, Sáinz has detailed that the first ship with coal stored in the outer port of Ferrol is being transferred by road to As Pontes . This shipment was 165,000 tons, but new shipments will come depending on the consumption of the groups. In fact, the arrival of another ship with another 160,000 tons, with coal from Indonesia, is scheduled to dock for this Wednesday. From Endesa it is pointed out that “in an energy crisis situation like the current one”, the electricity company “puts two of its production units into operation”, despite the fact that “our strategy has not changed, since Endesa maintains its commitment to decarbonization by the year 2040 and continues betting on renewable energies”. As Pontes had four groups available to produce energy. Last September, the Ministry of Ecological Transition closed two. Now, of the two that could be activated, one has been put to work. The plant is ‘resurrected’ once againEndesa announced in 2019, within the process of closing coal plants in Spain due to its environmental impact, the definitive closure of the plant. The closing date was set for the year 2021. However, the energy crisis altered all plans. In the midst of the dismantling process and with dozens of workers already relocated to other parts of Spain, in the autumn of last year the surprise jumped. With the cost of energy rising, the electricity company decided to transport coal to the facilities again and partially reactivate the plant. On November 22, 2021, ore was burned again after months of inactivity. After those first tons of coal, more arrived at the port of Ferrol. The plant was producing power until the ore ran out in mid-June 2022. This summer, around 40 regular employees and another 100 subcontractors continued to work at the plant. Endesa’s roadmap was for dismantling and the order was to work for the demolition. However, the plant is still alive. Now, due to a new exceptional situation, it starts up again.
