Call for pedestrians to wear reflective clothing: “Our grandparents are dying when they go looking for bread”

11 people have been run over in Galicia in this 2022The average age of the dead pedestrians is 81 yearsNone of the deceased was wearing a reflective vestA septuagenarian woman died this Saturday run over in the municipality of Vimianzo (A Coruña). It was approximately eight in the evening, the visibility was not good and a car hit her when she was trying to cross an area not designated for pedestrian crossing. She was not wearing any reflective clothing. The Civil Traffic Guard focuses on this last aspect. Because of the eleven pedestrians who have died this year on Galician roads, none had clothes to make their presence more visible when passing vehicles. In most of the abuses that occur in the Galician autonomous community, common patterns coincide. They occur in rural areas, in areas where there are no pedestrian crossings and the victims are usually very old people. In fact, the average age of pedestrians killed this year in Galicia is 81 years. “Our grandparents are dying when they go to look for bread, to see the animals or simply when they go for a walk. We need to make them aware so that they use reflective clothing ”, they insist from the Civil Guard. So far this year, Galician roads have claimed the lives of 71 people. 15% of those killed were pedestrians. The reflective vest is a ‘life insurance’ From the Traffic authorities they insist that the use of reflective vests can save many lives, since it allows the driver of a car to see the danger with time, sometimes enough to be able to brake. Its use is always important, but more so now that daylight hours are decreasing and weather conditions are more adverse. “Most of the pedestrians died when they were already reaching the other side of the road. They do not burst in suddenly, as can happen in cities. They cross when no one is coming, but their movements are slow and they don’t have time to get to the other side, the driver doesn’t see them and, suddenly, he finds him in the middle without being able to do anything to avoid running him over, ”they report from Traffic. . According to data provided by the DGT, a pedestrian wearing a reflective vest is visible to a driver more than 150 meters away. If it is within your field of vision, that means that a vehicle can brake even when traveling at 100 kilometers per hour. However, this visual range decreases considerably when the pedestrian is not wearing high visibility clothing. A passerby wearing light clothing and without a reflective vest is not visible at more than 40 meters; and with dark clothes and without a vest he could not be seen more than 20. This means that the driver has less time to brake at the moment he sees that pedestrian. Sometimes when he wants to dodge or slow down, it’s already too late.
