Heavy rains flood the Zorroza tunnel and complicate circulation in Bilbao

At least four cars parked under the Zorroza tunnel have been trapped by the watersThe rain has flooded the underpass of the Olabeaga train stationLarge rafts on the road have complicated traffic early in the Biscayan capitalVery rainy day with strong occasional showers during the first half of this Friday in Euskadi. The rainfall has greatly complicated circulation, as can be seen in the video that accompanies this information. The windshield wipers of the cars were not enough due to the intensity of the rain. Small waterfalls have even formed on the slopes of the mountains, which have caused large pools of water on the road. They are images of Bilbao, which is the Basque capital that has suffered the most from the consequences of the downpour. The almost 30 liters per square meter of water that have fallen in an hour have flooded the Olabeaga Renfe Station, flooding the underpass for passengers. But it is the Bilbao neighborhood of Zorroza that has borne the brunt. The drains have not been enough and, once again, the tunnel on Clara Campoamor street, near the sports center, has been flooded. And this is the second time in less than a year. In November 2021, the rains overflowed the Cadagua River and at least 15 vehicles were trapped. This time there have been four. One of them, a fatal coincidence, belongs to a woman who, in the previous one, had to send her vehicle to the junkyard due to a total loss. The situation is expected to normalize throughout the day. According to Euskalmet, the Basque Meteorological Agency, as the afternoon progresses the rain will be more occasional and in the evening it will begin to subside.
