Every third Saturday of September, that is to say today, the International Coastal and Beach Cleanup Day is celebrated all over the world. That is why on the Costa Brava, in Calella de Palafrugell, dozens of volunteers have spent this Saturday morning collecting kilos and kilos of rubbish. Among them is the young Spanish woman Olivia Mandle, a young climate activist and staunch defender of animal rights, whom many have already dubbed the Spanish Greta Thunberg. Olivia is a young fighter, passionate, empathic and committed. She loves the sea and cetaceans and is very concerned about the environmental problems that surround her. On a daily basis, she tries to reduce her ecological footprint and to make a difference with her actions. Recently, she has been recognized as a mini-heroine of the educational program “Roots & Shoots” for her work as an environmental activist and her fight for the protection of marine animals. “It takes a chain of conscience so that people are aware of the lamentable state of our seas and our beaches and above all to reflect on this reality” explains Olivia Mandle, who adds that “we must open our eyes because this is our only home, there is no planet B and right now we are facing the sixth mass extinction” .183 kg of rubbish on the beachesThe cleanup of the Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc beaches, organized by the town council and the WE CARE Foundation, has had the participation of 577 volunteers who have removed waste on foot, by diving, with kayaking or paddle surfing. Throughout the day, the volunteers have collected 183 kg of rubbish from these beaches, a figure that demonstrates the importance of not littering and keeping the sea ​​and beaches.
