Katie received a message via the ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) which set out what needed to be said to the passengers and crew on board the flight. She shared the transcript on Twitter and wrote that she was flying through Europe at the time. She said: “I received word of the death of Her Majesty the Queen via acars message somewhere over France. A bit surreal and extremely sad moment. Good night Your Majesty, I will miss you very much.” Katie added a picture of the message which read: ‘We are very saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this difficult time.” Katie explained that she and her crew had decided not to tell the passengers, writing: “We decided not to, we had Wi-Fi on board so it’s acting anyway she spread across the cabin. It was definitely a touching moment.” It was as the plane was about to land at London Heathrow that Katie decided to inform the passengers after all. She said: “At this point I thought I should at least tell you before arrive at the terminal because I know many will be very, very sad. We will all be thinking of her family at this time.” The footage showed cabin crew and flight passengers crying before the plane landed.
