Carolina Cavalli: “In ‘Amanda’ I talk about loneliness and isolation”

(Adnkronos / Cinematografo.it) – “Benny like Amanda is a melancholy combative”. To speak is Carolina Cavalli who today presented her work before her in competition at Venice 79 in the Orizzonti Extra section. A film starring Benedetta Porcaroli as her Amanda, a girl who feels misunderstood and deeply alone. Beside her: Galatea Bellugi, Michele Bravi, Monica Nappo, Margherita Maccapani Missoni (“I’m a stylist and the character I play looks like me”) and Giovanna Mezzogiorno. In cinemas from October 13th distributed by I Wonder Pictures, the film is produced by Elsinore Film Wildside & Tenderstories and was also previewed at the Toronto Film Festival: “I hope it works with English subtitles because there are a lot of dialogue,” he says. Carolina Cavalli, who studied script for a long time (“I consider the characters as people”) and who has among her cinematographic references: Wes Anderson, Aki Kaurismäki and Paolo Sorrentino (for the latter there is also a dedication in her film) . “I wanted to talk about loneliness and isolation – continues the director – The protagonist does not feel alone because she has no friends, but because she always feels out of place and I believe that this feeling is something generational”. And Benedetta Porcaroli: ” loneliness is a theme present before and after Covid. We are in a paradox, on the one hand there is hyperconnection, on the other there is isolation. With the network, instead of feeling closer, we feel deeply alone. My brother, who is younger than me, often plays with his friends via bluetooth without ever seeing each other. It seems crazy to me and I think we must all work hard to find human contact ”. Tips? “It’s difficult to understand how to do it- replies the actress-. We cannot think of eliminating social networks, but we can think of promoting channels to get out of this situation. Perhaps we should teach cinema in schools or bring more children to the theater to let them experience the collective vision. Unfortunately the new generation grew up directly with Netflix. “And on her character:” There is a humor that is in my strings. I was amazed by the multi-faceted script. The sense of non-belonging is something we all know and I have tried it a few times too. ”The cast also includes singer Michele Bravi, for the first time on the big screen. “Carolina chose me, but she didn’t know I was singing,” he laughs. And on a possible dialogue between cinema and music (just yesterday at the Venice Film Festival the film ‘Ti mangio il cuore’ by Pippo Mezzapesa, which sees the Roman singer Elodie in her first role as an actress, entered the competition in the Orizzonti section): breaking the banks between the two worlds. Here I play a straight drug dealer. In my moments of isolation I found refuge in art: a book that made me feel less just because it told what I was experiencing or a song that expressed what I felt. Art serves to express what the world is “. And the director: “I found Michele similar to Vincent Gallo, an actor I really like. He was consistent and credible. ”“ The film was shot in Turin. I chose it because it is easy to feel disoriented there, for its places that you would not find in reality and then there are many extremely different environments. It is a city that I find cold and therefore it is ideal for the colors, for the tone and for Amanda ”, concludes the director.
