Club legend Slovan Alexander Horváth Source: Instagram/ŠK Slovan Bratislava BRATISLAVA – Alexander Horváth, the former captain of football Slovan Bratislava, who led them to win the Cup Winners’ Cup (PVP) in 1969, died on Wednesday at the age of 83. The club announced this on its official site. Horváth came to Slovan from Žilina in 1963. He quickly won a permanent place in the team and later became the captain. In this position, he achieved the greatest success with the team in the history of Czechoslovak club football – a 3:2 victory in the PVP final over Barcelona in Basel, Switzerland. The defender was considered a legend of the club, but he himself rejected such attributes. “A lot of people talk about me as a legend. But I don’t consider myself one. As a player, I just did what was necessary, either for the people or for the club,” he said during a visit to Bratislava in 2019 at the club’s centenary and celebration 50 years since the win in PVP. He made twenty-six starts between 1964 and 1970 also in the Czechoslovakia jersey, with which he appeared at the World Cup in Mexico. After the championship, he headed to Belgium, where he played for RWD Molenbeek, but two years later his peak form ended with an Achilles injury. Later he also worked as a coach and decided to stay abroad.
