Goal celebrations by Czech women’s hockey players Source: Profimedia FREDERIKSHAVN – The Czech women’s hockey players beat Finland 2:1 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the World Championships and are celebrating a historic promotion to the medal fights. Aneta Tejralová decided the meeting in Frederikshavn, Denmark, with a time of 60:41. Historic success of the Czech Republic and with the Slovak assistant Zverenka of Canadian coach Carly MacLeodová and Slovak assistant Dušan Andrašovský defeated the Finns at the top event for the first time in history and avenged their defeats from the previous two world championships. Next to Tejralová, Daniela Pejšová made her mark in terms of scoring, and goalkeeper Klára Peslarová gave an excellent performance. The Czechs entered the match actively and in the 3rd minute Šapovalivová could open the scoring. But the Finns defended themselves even during the subsequent first weakening. In the 9th minute, Neubauerová threatened from a break, but goalkeeper Keisalaová saved her attempt with her shoulder. Peslarová had the same number of saves in the first period as her colleague and she also caught reliably. In the second part, the Czechs did not use another numerical advantage, they were finally rewarded for their activity in the 37th minute, when defender Pejšová opened the scoring after a blocked shot by captain Mills and scored her fourth goal in the tournament. The northerners were close to equalizing in the 40th minute, when Mlynková was sent off, Savolainenová hit the top post. Peslarová, an excellent catcher, kept her teammates in a continued advantage at the beginning of the third part. The Finns continued to have significantly more of the game, and in the 49th minute they managed to equalize when Tulusová prevailed. A minute later, Peslarová destroyed Nieminen’s next chance. Even despite the shooting advantage, the favored Finns could not decide the match in normal playing time. Tejralová ended the extension quickly, as she took advantage of a mistake by the Finnish captain Hiirikoski and beat Keisala with a shot at the near post. The Czech Republic, which lost to Finland three times in the quarterfinals at the World Cup, is thus celebrating its first advance to the semifinals. In the event that Canadian ice hockey players fulfill the role of favorites against Sweden in the last quarter-final, the Czechs will meet the USA team in the semi-finals. The Canadian women completed the semi-final four when they beat Sweden 3-0 in the final quarter-final match.
