The executive is advancing on its additional device aimed at protecting the French in the face of soaring fuel prices. This Monday, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, proposed the introduction of a new fuel allowance for all those who are obliged to use their car to go to work. It would be paid “according to the level of income”, he added, without specifying the ceiling which could be fixed, leaving that to the parliamentary debate on the purchasing power package. Contacted, the minister’s entourage provided details to Le Figaro. “This could concern the French located up to the fifth or sixth decile of standard of living”, it was indicated, specifying that going up to the fifth decile would imply paying this aid to around 11 million households, affecting up to at 1600 euros net per month. In addition, “this compensation will be paid in one go, so as not to ask the French to make a declaration every month”, explained the entourage of Bruno Le Maire. To avoid a gas plant, it would be allocated on simple declaration and paid in one go. To avoid abuse, the administration may carry out checks via the insurance file or the statements of technical checks. The amount of this compensation has yet to be defined, but it should exceed 60 euros, it has been suggested to the Ministry of the Economy. “A fixed amount will be paid to workers and work-study trainees, regardless of the number of kilometers traveled each day to go to work. But a bonus will be granted to heavy rollers, who drive more than 12,000 kilometers per year, ”we also said. Broader aid than that initially planned This aid would therefore go further than the compensation dedicated to “big riders”, that is to say who “do more than 12,000 km per year”, mentioned for a time by the government. “There are plenty of people who do not travel 12,000 km a year, who take their car to go to work and who can no longer make ends meet”, justified Bruno Le Maire, on France Inter. A discount of 18 centimes per liter of fuel has already been applied at the pump for all motorists since April 1 to mitigate the impact of soaring oil prices, and the purchasing power law will offer extend until the end of August. The Minister of the Economy has already proposed to the opposition to go further, by extending it until the end of the year. The two devices are not necessarily exclusive: the “worker fuel allowance”, as it is already called at Bercy, could either take over from this discount or be combined with it, at least temporarily, depending on the evolution of inflation. “All options are on the table. That will depend on the discussions with the parliamentarians”, tempers the entourage of the Minister of the Economy. Some in the opposition are already advocating, for their part, a reduction in VAT on gasoline, or even a maximum price per liter of 1.50 euros. The ceiling for tax and social exemption from the employer’s assumption of the fuel costs of its employees will thus be doubled, from 200 to 400 euros for the years 2022 and 2023.
