Chinese driver Guanyu Chou was horrified by a scary accident at the British Grand Prix Source: SITA/AP/Frank Augstein SILVERSTONE – Chinese Formula 1 driver Chou Kuan-yum was happy to have escaped unhurt from a scary accident in Sunday’s British Grand Prix, and is already looking forward to another race in Austria at the end of this week. The driver of the Alfa Romeo stable survived a collision in the dramatic opening, after which his single-seater turned its chassis upwards, flew off the track, jumped the tire barrier and landed in the protective mesh. Alexander Albon from Williams also ended up in the care of doctors after a mass accident with him. He also said that he is in good health. “It was a big accident and I’m glad I’m OK. The marshals and the medical team were fantastic at the track and responded quickly. I also have to thank the (international federation) FIA and Formula 1 for all the work they’ve done and are doing to improve the safety of our vehicles,” Chou Kuan-yüm said on the team’s website. Juki Cunoda, Esteban Ocon and Albon were also involved in the accident. The British Grand Prix was suspended for almost an hour. The native of Shanghai was freed from the vehicle by rescuers for several minutes, the driver was conscious the whole time. Already during the restarted race, the management of Alfa Romeo announced that the pilot was fine and without fractures. “The halo (head protection system) saved me. It shows that every step we take in the development of our cars has real and valuable results,” said Chou Kuan-yu. Albon went to the hospital While Ocon and Cunod continued the race, Albon also ended up in the care of doctors. The Williams driver also flew to the hospital for a check-up. But later he also texted that he was fine. “All good, all pets are ok,” Albon wrote on Twitter, referring to the animals painted on his own helmet. “But the main thing is that Chou Kuan-yu is fine. Thanks to the entire medical team and for all the news. I will now focus on Austria,” added the Thai Williams racer. The Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg is scheduled for the coming weekend.
