At least 10 people died and another 20 are missing after the passage of Hurricane Agatha in Oaxaca

Agatha weakens after making landfall in Mexico 4:18 (CNN Spanish) — The governor of the state of Oaxaca, Alejandro Murat, said Tuesday in local media that at least 10 people have died and another 20 remain missing after the passage of the Hurricane Agatha through that Mexican state this Monday. Murat indicated that most of the missing persons are in the high areas of the mountains. The governor explained that the tragedy occurred due to the overflow of rivers and landslides. Earlier, the Oaxaca state government reported several missing persons in a statement. The authorities indicated that of the missing persons, four are due to possible drag from the overflow of the Copalita River; two are due to a possible landslide in Santa Catarina Xanaguía belonging to the municipality of San Juan Ozolotepec; one due to a landslide in San Mateo Piñas; and one in San Carlos Yautepec due to possible river drag in the town of Asunción Tlacolulita. “In these care and rescue works, elements of Civil Protection, Public Security and the National Guard participate. The arrival of the Attorney General of the State of Oaxaca is expected. Health brigades also travel to serve the population of Santa Catarina. Xanaguía and San Mateo Piñas,” the statement added. The governor of Oaxaca said that power has been restored in Huatulco and in other regions of the state. This Tuesday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that Agatha’s passage is losing strength and that “so far we have not had major damage.” It is unknown if the Cepco report was released before or after the president’s statements.
