Acute hepatitis children, WHO: “Cases are growing, one death reported”

Acute hepatitis children, reports are growing. As of April 21, at least 169 cases have been reported in 11 countries between Europe and America, and at least one death. This is what the World Health Organization reports in an update on the situation. Cases have been reported in the UK, Spain, Israel, the US, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Norway, France, Romania and Belgium. “Patients are aged between 1 month and 16 years – explains WHO – and 17 (about 10%) have required a liver transplant”. Adenovirus was detected in “at least 74 cases”, 18 of which were affected by serotype 41. Sars-CoV-2 was identified in 20 of those tested. In addition, 19 had co-infection with Sars-CoV-2 and adenovirus. It is not yet clear, the UN health agency specifies, “whether there has been an increase in hepatitis cases or an increase in awareness” on this issue. “While adenovirus is a possible hypothesis – concludes the WHO – investigations to identify the causative agent are underway”.
