According to a statement released Monday by the office of the first lady, who was wounded during the attack in which Moïse was killed, the president’s family will pay for the funeral.

In the release, Martine Moïse said that “our family decided to cover all the expenses of the president’s funeral, we will not accept money from the State. We want to thank everyone for their support in this difficult time, both here in Haiti and outside of Haiti.”

The first lady was transferred to a Miami hospital for treatment after the attack and returned to Haiti over the weekend.

Last week, the acting prime minister, Claude Joseph, announced that the president’s funeral will take place on Friday, July 23, in Cap Haitien, in the north of the country. Since then Joseph has stepped down so that he can assume Ariel Henry, appointed by Moise shortly before he was assassinated.

In subsequent operations by the Haitian police, 26 alleged members of this command, made up of 18 Colombians, 5 Haitians and 3 US citizens, were detained, according to the spokeswoman for the Haitian National Police, Marie Michele Vernier, told CNN.

Their supposed roles vary, but most are not believed to be high-level plot architects. Several Haitian police officers have also been detained in a separate administrative investigation, according to Haitian authorities, who also accused Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a Haitian-American doctor, of orchestrating the murder.

Sanon, a Florida resident but currently detained in Haiti, has denied all knowledge of the operation to investigators and insisted on his innocence, CNN reported. In Florida, Sanon’s family believes they are making him a scapegoat, Steven Bross, a family friend, told CNN.
