“They’re going to shoot Odessa. Odessa!” said the highest Ukrainian official in the video message. “The Russians have always gone to Odessa. And they have always felt fervor in Odessa. Only cordiality. And now? Bombs on Odessa? Cannons on Odessa? Rockets on Odessa?” the Ukrainian president was heard.

“It will be a war crime. It will be a historical crime.” stressed Zelensky.

Since the beginning of their invasion on February 24, Russian troops have been successfully advancing through the territory of southern Ukraine, where they have already occupied the city of Kherson and surrounded the port city of Mariupol, but have so far largely bypassed Odessa during their campaign.

Odessa is a cosmopolitan port city on the Black Sea coast of southern Ukraine. It has a population of almost one million Russian and Ukrainian, and a Bulgarian or Jewish minority.
