During a phone call with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that recognition of Russian sovereignty over the Crimean peninsula and demilitarization of Ukraine were a condition for the fighting in Ukraine. “Vladimir Putin said the agreement was only possible if Russia’s legitimate security interests were unconditionally taken into account, including recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, and ensuring its neutral status,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

According to the French president’s office, the leaders talked for about 90 minutes, and during a phone call, Macron reiterated to Putin the demands of the international community to stop the Russian offensive in Ukraine.

The French president also called on Putin to stop the attacks on the civilian population by the Russian army, to maintain civilian infrastructure in Ukraine and to ensure safe access to key arteries, especially those south of Kiev.

“President Putin has confirmed his willingness to commit to these three points,” Macron’s office said in a statement.According to CNN television, Macron called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after a call with Putin.
