Stančík wants to convene a foreign committee

The situation in Ukraine will probably be addressed by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council. Its extraordinary meeting is planned to be initiated in the coming days by MP Andrej Stančík (OĽANO). He wants to present a resolution condemning “the aggressive actions of the Russian Federation and expressing solidarity with our neighbor, Ukraine.”

“Steps Vladimir Putin they are an unprecedented escalation of the situation, a breach of the Minsk conventions and an attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The pretext is fabricated information, which has repeatedly served in history as an excuse to wage war on the aggressors. Now is the time to stand up for the values of law, peace, freedom and democracy. The steps of the Kremlin are a denial of these values and require a response, “Stančík, who is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, stated in his opinion.

An unclassified member of the National Council has the same ambition Tomáš Valášek (Progressive Slovakia). He has already begun collecting signatures among coalition MPs to convene an extraordinary committee meeting.

The Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Slovakia also wants to summon a special meeting of the committee. “I want to ask the Russian ambassador why the Russian Federation has stepped on the Minsk agreements in an unprecedented way and occupied Donetsk and Luhansk. We will also be interested in explaining several critical statements by President Vladimir Putin about Slovakia and other countries that have joined the Alliance of their own free will, ”said Valášek.

The occupation of the two Ukrainian republics is considered by the non-attached MP to be a vile act of aggression without a precedent in the modern history of Europe.

“This attack is unprovoked, unjustified and unjustifiable. Progressive Slovakia condemns him and we ask the Government of the Slovak Republic to take all available steps to stop the Russian aggression and help Ukraine, “added Valášek.

Kéry doesn’t think it’s necessary

The head of the committee, Marián Kéry (Smer) for TASR, stated that if a third of the members so requested, the committee would convene.

According to Kéry, the Russian president’s decision to recognize the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics as independent states is contrary to international law. However, he does not think that a foreign committee needs to be convened. According to him, the information was learned last week when the Ukrainian and Russian ambassadors were on the committee.

Putin’s decision

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Monday that he had decided to immediately recognize the Donetsk People’s Republic and the People’s Republic of Luhan as independent states. He called for recognition of the sovereignty and independence of these self-proclaimed states.

In the meantime, the leadership of the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, has declared its cooperation and readiness to ratify the agreements with both republics as soon as possible.
