BEIJING – The representatives of Austria in alpine skiing are the new Olympic team champions. In Sunday’s final of the parallel at the Beijing Olympics, they defeated Germany thanks to a better time. The bronze was won by the Norwegians, who succeeded in a duel with the USA in the “small final”. American star Mikaela Shiffrin will leave Beijing without precious metal. The Slovaks were eliminated in the round of 16 with the USA and finished in twelfth place overall.

The Austrians, consisting of Katharina Truppe, Stefan Brennsteiner, Katharina Liensberger and Johannes Strolz (replacements were Michael Matt and Katharina Huber) as the highest team, were free in the round of 16, then knocked out Slovenia (3: 1) in the quarterfinals in the semi-finals. Norwegians world champions (2: 2, thanks to time) and in the final they defeated Germany again on the basis of time.

A beautiful end to these games

Strolz started in teams as the only gold medalist from Beijing’s individual competitions – before that he won the alpine combination and won silver in the slalom. “It’s an incredibly beautiful end to these games, as we have reached the top as an Austrian team. I am very grateful to be part of this team.” he told APA Strolz, who will carry his country’s flag at the closing ceremony.

The winning team was supported by Liensberger, who succeeded in all three performances: “I’ve gained more confidence with each ride. There aren’t many more beautiful things than standing with colleagues at the top level.”

The performance of Shiffrin, who had not finished the competition in the position of co-Bavarian for gold (slalom, huge slalom and combination) three times in Beijing, attracted ninth and finished 18th in the super-G, attracted particular attention. However, she did not survive in the teams either, she finished just behind the podium with her compatriots. In her collection, two gold and one silver medal from Sochi and Pyongyang remain from the Olympic Games.

“I experienced a lot of disappointments at these games, but today is not one of them. Today will be my favorite memory. My teammates are what brought me through this Olympics and I want to thank them for that.” said Shiffrin, who the Americans used mainly on slower tracks and lost three of her four rides. She defeated only the Slovak Rebecca Jančová.

Unpleasant wind and the advantage of the blue track

The competition on the “Rainbow” track, which was complicated by an unpleasant wind, ran in a parallel elimination way from the eight finals and the man-on-man, woman-on-woman system divided four points in each national duel. With a score of 2: 2, the procedure was decided by a better sum of times in the two fastest in both categories. The gold from Pyongyang was defended by the Swiss, but they lost in the quarterfinals with Germany. Four years ago, the Slovaks also lost in the eight-final first round with Germany.

The team races were originally scheduled for the games as early as Saturday, but a strong gust of wind forced the International Ski Federation and the organizers to postpone them to Sunday, the final day of the Beijing Olympics.
