According to the locals, it was so cold that night that all the animals had to be inside and covered them with straw and tarpaulins to keep them from freezing.

The end of the year was still warm

December 1928 was still above average warm. The beginning of the year was at similar temperatures, but on January 10, the winter began to show its strength. Cold air began to flow into Central Europe at a high pressure, the center of which was above northern and eastern Europe. The extreme winter began in February 1929. At that time, there was a huge pressure head over Greater Asia. It hit Scandinavia and spread to the Alps. At that time, pressure was moving lower over the Caspian and Black Seas. Cold air separated from them over St. Petersburg on February 7 and 8. From there, he began to move through our territory.

They measured -36 degrees in Bratislava

On the night of February 10, 1929, extremely low temperatures were recorded throughout Slovakia. Of the ten lowest temperatures in our territory, as many as nine were recorded that night. It was also cold in the south of Slovakia; e.g. in Hurbanov they measured -35 degrees, Lučenec -34, Nitra -33 and in Bratislava even -36 degrees. The temperature record was set in Vígľaš by a local teacher Ján Porsch, who was working for an agricultural institute at the time. He marked the temperature records at the hydrological station for eight years. It was established here by the Austrian monarchy in 1883.
