BUENOS AIRES – Injured Juan Martín del Potro does not consider the upcoming tournaments in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro a return to tennis, but rather a farewell. The Argentine tennis player will end his career after them first.

“This is one of the hardest news I have to report. Everyone knows and hopes I’m going back to tennis. It probably won’t be, and it’ll probably be more goodbye than a comeback.” told the US Open 2009 champion.

Former third world ranking player Del Potro last played on the grass at London’s Queen’s Club in 2019. Since then, he has undergone four right knee surgeries and is no longer able to reach full condition.

“That knee is a nightmare. I’ve tried my best to cure him, but I can’t do it anymore. I could never imagine ending my career outside of the court.” added Del Potro, who will play in the Argentine metropolis next week and in Rio the week thereafter.
