The Roma have the second largest representation among national minorities with a share of 1.23 percent of the population, Czech nationality is stated by 0.53 percent, Ruthenian by 0.44 percent of the Slovak population. The majority Slovak nationality concerns 83.8 percent of the population of the Slovak Republic. This follows from the results of the Census of Population, Housing and Dwellings 2021, which was published on Thursday by the Statistical Office (SO) of the Slovak Republic.

Slovak is the mother tongue of almost 82 percent of the Slovak population, namely 4,456,102 people. 8.5 percent of citizens state Hungarian as their mother tongue, 1.8 percent of people living in Slovakia consider Romani as their mother tongue. Other mother tongues account for less than one percent.

The Ruthenian language is the fourth most numerous mother tongue (0.7 percent of the population), the fifth most numerous mother tongue is Czech (0.6 percent). Other mother tongues in Slovakia include Ukrainian, Russian, English, German, Polish and Vietnamese. 1835 inhabitants mentioned the sign language Slovak as their mother tongue.

The Slovak mother tongue has the highest share in the Žilina and Trenčín regions (more than 90 percent). The Hungarian mother tongue has the largest representation in the Trnava and Nitra regions (over 20 percent) and the Roma mother tongue in the Prešov and Košice regions (over four percent).

The mother tongue is the language the inhabitant most often spoke in his childhood. A total of 12.5 percent of the Slovak population stated a mother tongue other than Slovak.
