At least seven people have been killed in Brazil and three are missing after a large rock crash crashed into boats carrying tourists across the lake, AFP reported, citing local authorities.

The accident took place on Saturday at Lake Furnas in the south-eastern state of Minas Gerais, where tourists watched helplessly as a large block of rock broke off the gorge and crashed into three boats.

Another 32 people were injured in the incident, nine of whom had to be hospitalized.

Rescue services initially reported 20 missing persons, but this number has dropped significantly as a large proportion of them have moved to hospitals on their own.

The rock walls, caves and waterfalls that surround the green waters of Lake Furnas are a popular tourist destination.

In southeastern Brazil, a large amount of precipitation has fallen in recent days, which rescuers say has increased the likelihood of a rock cliff falling.
