Tisova Street in Varín led the police to charge ten deputies – Denník N

The police accused ten deputies from Varín of committing an act of sympathy for a movement aimed at suppressing fundamental rights and freedoms. The accusation is related to a dispute over the change of the name of one of the streets of Varín, which is named after the president of the Slovak war state, Jozef Tis.

The information was first published by zilina.SP21.sk. He wrote that deputies were accused of not voting in the summer for changing the name of Dr. Street. Jozef Tis, which was presented to the council by Lenka Ticháková, Member of Parliament. She is not among the accused.

In Varín near Žilina, the only street in Slovakia is named after Tisa. He was sentenced to death after the end of World War II in 1947. After the fall of the communist regime in 1989, the president of the Slovak state became a symbol for nationalist and far-right parties.

Tisza began to be worshiped, and his statues and memorial plaques were erected in public places. Shortly after the division of Czechoslovakia, they decided to name the street after him and, paradoxically, they did so by misinterpreting it, so the name of the street is Jozef Tisza. It has been so without much attention for many years, it did not change until this year after the initiative of Lenka Ticháková, who could not identify with the fact that in the village in which she lives, the street is named after Tis.

So far, little is known about the reasons for accusing local MPs. The police confirmed him, but did not disclose other facts. She appealed to the ongoing proceedings.

Police do not explain, deputies filed a complaint against the accusation

The investigator accused deputies under section 422 paragraph I of the Criminal Code, which states that whoever expresses sympathy in a public or public place for a group, movement or ideology that is or has in the past aimed at suppressing fundamental rights and freedoms shall be punished by imprisonment for half year to three years.

However, none of the deputies openly expressed sympathy for Tis or his regime at this year’s meeting of the council, which also discussed the proposal to rename the street. One possibility is that the investigator considers the non-approval of the proposal to change the name of Tisova Street as support.

Andrea Rosenberg, an MP from Varín, is also among the accused. Jozefa Tisu.

Rosenberg confirmed to Diary N that she did not take part in the municipal council meeting. However, she did not comment on the allegations and referred to an agreement on joint action with other Members.

Lenka Milová, MEP, published the opinion on behalf of all accused deputies. They state in it that they do not agree with the accusation because they do not feel guilty.

“We note that each of us leads a blameless family life and we carry out our mandate as a member of the Member States responsibly, in accordance with the applicable legislation and for the benefit of the citizens of the municipality,” the deputies wrote.

Ticháková faces verbal attacks

Deputy Lenka Ticháková learned about the accusations of all local deputies except her – that is, ten out of eleven – only from the media, and she could not say anything more about the reasons.

“I am sincerely sorry that it has come this far (colleagues’ accusations). On the other hand, it could have been resolved a long time ago if my colleagues had taken the facts into account and suggested a way for us to deal with the problematic street, “said the deputy.

Ticháková has recently faced a number of verbal attacks on the Internet, especially after she was awarded the White Crow award on November 17. She was described on social networks as a liberal manure, an extremist, a poor man, a bitch and a traitor.

“It simply came to our notice then when the liberal manure took office. The people of Varín have not yet driven her out of the village, they should drive her like a dusty dog… “

“Ticháková is an extremist, with her activities she suppresses the rights and freedoms of others. To the bass with her… And they are not afraid to go among people? ”They react to the deputy on social networks in the same way.

The local MP claims that the situation towards her is not radicalizing in the municipality yet, and she does not admit the reactions from the internet discussions and does not want to be “scattered” by them. Some people from Varínka advised her to move out a few months ago if she didn’t like something in the village when she came up with the idea to rename Tisova Street.

They did not change the name of the street, they only took note of the proposal

MP Lenka Ticháková’s proposal to change the name of Tisova Street in Varín was submitted to the municipal council meeting at the beginning of August this year. She also supported the request to change the name of the street with the expert opinions of historians from the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Institute of the Memory of the Nation.

Varín’s deputies did not vote in Tichák’s proposal in the tense atmosphere. Instead, they adopted a resolution by a group of eight MEPs who first identified the legislative shortcomings of the Tichák initiative in an extensive legal analysis, and then took note of the name change and adopted a resolution disagreeing with the reservations that the current situation was contrary to current legislation.

Simply put, they decided to wait for NAKA, the prosecutor’s office, or the court to deal with the name of the street, and then perhaps hold a local referendum.

The street after the hero of the SNP became a street named after Tis

In Varín, municipal deputies renamed Kpt. Pfliegel, the hero of the SNP, to Tisova at the end of 1993, although the president of the war-torn Slovak Republic, Jozef Tiso, never had any ties to the village or visited it. The reason for changing the name of the street was that the people from Pfliegl Street respect the personality of Jozef Tis.

Eight years later, the district prosecutor’s office in Žilina looked at the renaming of the street in Varín ex officio and found that the adoption of the resolution violated the law. The village contacted the professional nomenclature commission only after the approval of the street renaming, and it should have been the other way around.

In addition to the fact that the professional nomenclature commission did not recommend renaming the street to Tisova, the resolution also conflicted with the laws on municipal establishment and anti-fascist resistance, which prohibit the placement of texts and symbols celebrating, promoting or defending the regime of Tisova Slovak Republic.

An investigator from the National Criminal Agency began in the case of the name Street Dr. Jozef Tisu was prosecuted in Varín for the offense of expressing sympathy for the movement aimed at suppressing fundamental rights and freedoms at the beginning of July this year.
