RED DEER – The only preparatory match before the Junior World Championships awaits Slovak hockey players under the age of 20 the day before Christmas Eve, when they will compete with Germany in Red Deere. After the isolation and training, not only the players but also the coaches are looking forward to the duel, which starts on December 23 at 22:00 CET. The representatives will have the last chance to convince the coaches of their participation in the final nomination.

Before the general at the World Championships, the Slovaks in Five Deere completed five training units, one of which included a model match. Several Slovak hockey players operating in Europe have been struggling in recent days to adapt to the narrower dimensions of the overseas rink. Some were not even happy with the ice, which is frozen after the ads were painted for only three to four days. “I’m struggling a bit with this rink, but my teammates are making it more beautiful for me. I’ll make it better by the start of the preparatory match.” Juraj Slafkovský stated for hockeyslovakia.sk and added to the ice margin: “He’s scary. I’m not used to it, but what can we do. We sharpen the skates as much as possible, but we won’t affect it. The first training after the quarantine was a little worse, but we were getting better every year.”

The Slovak “twenties” met with Germany twice in the 2021/2022 season. At first she won 3: 1 at the tournament in Füssen, in the second match in November in Lillehammer, Norway, she won 5: 4 after extra time. Slafkovský did not play any of these duels. He last played against the Germans at the junior level at last year’s championship. He does not mention the best in the 3: 4 loss after extra time, although the point gained guaranteed the Slovaks the certainty of participating in the quarterfinals: “We were able to bring the match to a successful end. We unfortunately lost in overtime, but that’s hockey. I believe it will turn out better this year. We came here to win every match.”

Oleksij Myklucha also remembers the mentioned duel. The Germans scored a beautiful goal in it with a converted bluff. “We’ve played against them many times. We know them, both teams have quality. We have to use all our strengths to our advantage. It’s a preparatory match, but it would certainly be nice to score a similar goal for the Germans now. And if not, let me at least it will come out at the championship, if I get to it, “ said for hockeyslovakia.sk Myklucha, realizing that in the duel with the Germans, there will also be “spots” in the final nomination: “No one has a certain place. Whatever happens, an injury or anything else will come. But I firmly believe that I will participate in the junior championship for the second time.”

After a duel with the Germans, the coaching staff will announce the final nomination for the World Cup. The current 28-name list will narrow down by three players to 25, whom they will enter on the final roster at the first championship directorate on December 25.
