Covid Italy, hospitalization among children doubled

Covid Italy, there is a boom in hospitalizations among minors. It is the most significant data of the week 14-21 December in the Fiaso report. In the 4 pediatric hospitals and in the pediatric wards of the 21 sentinel hospitals of the Italian Federation of Healthcare and Hospitals, the number of hospitalized children practically doubled, from 23 to 45, with an increase of 96%. Among the young patients – emerges from the Fiaso report – 69% are between 0 and 4 years old while the remaining part of 31% is between 5 and 18 years old. None of the children over the age of 5 had been vaccinated with a full course. It should be emphasized, however, that half of the children ended up in hospital, precisely 49%, have an unvaccinated parent and as many as 38% have both parents no vax. NOT VACCINATED – The increase in unvaccinated in ordinary wards is 16.7% while the number of vaccinated in hospital decreases by 2%. And unvaccinated patients account for 53% of the total, the report shows. Fiaso also records that the growth rate of Covid hospitalizations remains more or less stable at 7%. The number of patients hospitalized for Covid is therefore growing at a constant rate but – explains Fiaso – it is in effect a two-speed pandemic: it accelerates as regards the number of no vaxes, it slows down in relation to vaccinated patients. More and more unvaccinated subjects end up in hospital for contracting the virus. The survey in the 21 hospitals, a total of 1,301 adult patients, confirms the growth trend of hospitalizations equal to 7%, a similar figure even if slightly lower than a week ago when an increase of 8.5% was recorded . There is a clear difference in age between vaccinated and non vaccinated: the former are on average 73 years old, the latter 63 years old or 10 years younger. Comorbidities among the vaccinated were also higher (73%), while among the unvaccinated, 50% of the hospitalized did not suffer from other diseases. Clear prevalence of male subjects among the hospitalized, which is accentuated compared to last week. “We are facing two epidemics: one that runs and concerns no vaxes who end up in resuscitation and develop severe forms of Covid disease and one more slow that involves the vaccinated, mostly people of advanced age and with serious previous diseases, and who have not yet taken the third dose “, comments the president Fiaso Giovanni Migliore. “This highlights even more the importance of vaccination in protecting against the disease and in particular the anticipation of the third dose for the frail”, he concludes. INTENSIVE CARE – In one week the growth in the intensive wards of Covid patients was 5%. In resuscitation, the proportions between vaccinated and non-vaccinated continue to be extremely different: no vaxes are about 70% of the total number of patients and are more markedly young. The age range in the two groups is also different: the youngest no vax finished in intensive care is 21 years old, the oldest 89, while among the vaccinated the youngest is 37 years old. Of those vaccinated, 88% completed the vaccination course with 2 doses for more than 4 months and did not perform the recommended booster dose.
