Tesla Model 3 has a new rival: Nio ET5 electric sedan promises up to 1,000 kilometers – Živé.sk

The young Chinese carmaker NIO has long shown great ambitions that do not only concern her home country. For example, she recently completed its first battery exchange station in Norway. It has big plans for the old continent, which was confirmed again at its own NIO Day event, which included the unveiling of the new ET5 model. Details about him revealed in the press release.

Aerodynamic drag coefficient 0.24

The NIO ET5 is a medium-sized sedan that builds on the 5.1-meter ET7 sedan, introduced about a year ago. It is to compete with vehicles such as the Tesla Model S. Its younger and more compact sibling is therefore focused mainly on the Model 3, currently the most popular electric car ever.

Compared to the American opponent, the Chinese novelty is larger, its dimensions rank it in the upper middle class. Its length reaches 4.79 meters. It measures 1.96 m in width and 1.50 m in height, while standing on a 2.89-meter wheelbase.

Thanks to the adjusted proportions, the NIO ET5 looks more dynamic than its more luxurious brother. On the other hand, less smooth lines mean a worse coefficient of aerodynamic drag. With a value of 0.24, however, the electric car still belongs to the elite of serial production.

The protruding eye will not be left on the body by several protrusions that worsen the air flow. It is a frontal Lidar and numerous cameras or sensors used for autonomous control functions, this solution the sedan inherited from an older sibling together with a modern design language.

Augmented reality with glasses

NIO ET5 has a frameless door with soft closing, behind which there is a cabin for five passengers. Thanks to the panoramic roof with an area of ​​1.28 m² is well lit. It has minimalist shapes, to which the use of optically hidden ventilation vents contributes.

The simple dashboard is dominated by a round module belonging to the voice-controlled assistant NOMI, which is equipped with artificial intelligence. In addition, it has two screens belonging to the instrument panel (10.2 inches) and the multimedia system (12.8 inches).

The interior does not include a head-up display, although it offers augmented reality features. Instead of windshields, he uses special glasses developed in cooperation with Nreal. Although their image is actually very small, it simulates a 201-inch screen placed 6 meters in front of the driver. We do not yet know more details about this non-traditional element.

The NIO also mentions mood lighting with 256 colors and Dolby Atmos sound from the equipment. According to the manufacturer, the electric car has advanced autonomous capabilities that will be unlocked gradually. First, their company needs to be approved for road traffic. It wants to offer the technology for a monthly fee, in domestic China it will be 680 yuan (94.14 euros). The carmaker has not yet commented on the specific level of car independence.

Available with three battery sizes

The sedan has both axles powered. An induction electric motor with a maximum output of 150 kW (204 hp) is used at the front, the rear axle has a permanent magnet unit reaching 210 kW (286 hp). The system maximum is therefore 360 ​​kW (490 hp). The torque peaks at 700 Nm.

The NIO ET5 can accelerate from room to 100 km / h in 4.3 seconds. It only needs a 33.9-meter track to stop a hundred, which is helped by the front brakes with 4-piston calipers. The carmaker draws attention to the ideal weight distribution on the axles (50:50), the very low position of the center of gravity (482.6 mm from the road) and the wide wheelbase (1,685 mm).

These numbers have a positive effect not only on driving characteristics, but also overturning resistance. The Chinese electric car aspires to a five-star safety rating within the domestic organization C-NCAP and the internationally recognized Euro NCAP.

The ET5 inherited from a larger sibling, among other things, a range of three batteries. The base has 75 kWh and according to the CLTC standard will offer a range of 550 kilometers, in the higher version the NIO speaks with a capacity of 100 kWh and a maximum of over 700 km. The top variant has a huge 150-kilowatt-hour battery promising a range of more than 1,000 km. It is clear in advance that the numbers based on the stricter WLTP standard will be slightly lower.

The more luxurious sedan comes to customers first

In addition to the unveiling of the ET5, the carmaker began accepting the first pre-orders. In the domestic market, its prices start at the level of 258 thousand yuan, which is about 35,700 euros. For this amount, clients will receive a vehicle without a battery. They can rent it on the basis of monthly payments or choose a variant with a battery, which costs at least 328 thousand yuan (about 45,400 euros).

Pilot copies of the novelty are to come to future owners in September next year. Customers will be the first to reach the more luxurious ET7 sedan, which is set to go on sale on January 20. The NIO plans to deliver it on March 28. The carmaker has made 20 different modifications and improvements to this type since its premiere, thanks to which, for example, the time required to sprint 0-100 km / h has improved by one tenth to 3.8 seconds. The drag coefficient, in turn, dropped to only 0.208.

NIO electric cars were sold this year in Norway, where an SUV with the designation ES8 is available. In the next twelve months, the company plans to expand to Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden. In 2025, it wants to be represented in more than 25 countries around the world, while it also wants to rapidly develop its network of chargers and exchange stations.
