Referendum 2021: a significant drop in the estimated turnout at 5 p.m. – New Caledonia the 1st – NC 1st

While the Caledonians have moved to the polling stations since 7 a.m. this morning, the estimate of the official turnout was unveiled by the high commission this Sunday evening at 5 p.m.

The estimate of the participation rate fell. This Sunday, December 12, 2021 marks the third and last referendum on the future of New Caledonia. From 7 am – and until 7 pm this evening for Nouméa, 6 pm for the majority of the territory and 5 pm for Tiga and the island Ouen – the Caledonians went to the polling stations of Caillou to put their ballot in the ballot box, concerning the YES or the NO to the independence of the territory. Note that compared to previous referendums, the opening hours of the polling stations are different due to the health crisis.

At 5 p.m. on December 12, 2021, the New Caledonian High Commission unveiled the estimated participation rate. He’s from 41.60%. As a reminder, in 2018, at 5 p.m., the estimated turnout was 73.68% against 79.63% in 2020. A significant drop compared to the 2020 referendum.

Throughout the day, the Caledonians went to the polling stations of their municipalities. As soon as the polling stations opened, attendance was low compared to previous years (2020 and 2018). We take stock of the estimated participation rate recorded at 5 p.m.

Nouméa: 59.4% at 4 p.m. compared to 76.4% in 2020

Dumbéa: 59.3% against 83% in 2020

Lifou: 4.2% at 4 p.m. or 451 voters out of 10,798 registered. For 2020, at the same time, the rate was 64.8% or 6,981 voters out of 10,776 registered.

Kouaoua: 13.05% at 2:30 p.m.

La Foa: 63% at 5 p.m.

The other estimates will arrive in the evening.
