” The rapid deterioration of epidemic indicators in our region and the level of incidence reached, unprecedented since the start of the pandemic, confirms the strong impact of the fifth wave ”, thus indicates the ARS in a press release. “The importance of
number of serious Covid cases taken care of in our health establishments has led the Regional Health Agency to ask public and private health establishments to activate their white plan, an exceptional mechanism intended to strengthen the organization of hospitals in the face of the resumption of the epidemic. ”

Combined with other winter pathologies

According to the latest report from ARS Occitanie made public on Tuesday, December 7, tension is high in hospitals in the region due to the resumption of the epidemic, but also to the arrival of patients suffering from winter pathologies, like the flu.

1129 people are currently hospitalized in Occitania due to covid-19, including 230 in intensive care and critical care. In four days, since the last ARS report published on Friday, December 3, 2021, 189 more people had to be hospitalized.

“New admissions, due to Covid, have experienced a very sustained increase over the past 3 weeks, both in critical care services (nearly 100 per week) and in conventional medicine (nearly 600 per week).”

Resuscitation departments over 90% full

The occupancy rate of intensive care units is thus 92% throughout Occitania, the region currently having 560 intensive care beds (500 outside periods of tension). The share of covid patients exceeds a third of available beds.

And the ARS expects this influx of patients to continue, hence the decision to trigger the white plan. “It makes it possible to better prepare for receiving patients, to increase the number of intensive care beds and to gradually deprogram certain operations which are less priority in order to organize the reception and management of a massive influx of patients », Specifies the health authority.

Health professionals called in for reinforcement

In addition, the white plan makes it possible to call in back-up personnel. A call to all voluntary health professionals (students, retirees, freelancers, employees, etc.) is thus launched. They are called to make themselves known on the dedicated site.
