BRATISLAVA. At a time when vaccine opponents are dying in covid wards and hospitals are dealing with more and more cases of ivermectin poisoning, the Ministry of Justice is coming up with a change in legislation that should also address the spread of medical misinformation.

Two independent sources confirmed this to the SME daily. They should announce this at Wednesday’s press conference on the amendment to the Criminal Code.

At present, the police are unable to deal with cases where ordinary people and even doctors are spreading delusions. It can only deal with situations that fit into the section on the dissemination of an alarm message or direct damage to health by folk healers.

Slovak legislation is lazy in this area, says Daniel Milo of Globsec, who previously worked at the Ministry of the Interior as an expert in the fight against extremism.

“It should be possible to penalize the kind of misinformation that objectively has consequences for people’s health and lives, especially if it is spread long-term and intentionally,” says Milo.

In similar cases, the police will only prosecute exceptionally. For example, to this day, it addresses the initiative of the Ministry of Health for one of the most famous portals that spreads medical delusions on the Internet.
