Nvidia RTX 40: the generational gap is becoming clearer – Frandroid

A new source says factories in Taiwan are gearing up for production of Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 40xx cards. These would use the new architecture expected on this generation.

After the critical success and commercial shortage of the RTX 30xx, many gamers are hoping that the situation will settle with the next generation of graphics cards from Nvidia, in 2022. If nothing is less certain for the moment, the GeForce RTX 40 generation is already talking about it and its technical innovations.

From 5 nm TSMC for RTX 40

This is not surprising, the information has already been whispered for several months: the Nvidia RTX 4000 should adopt a new architecture engraved more finely. After the Ampere GPU engraved in 8 nm of the RTX 30, the 2022 generation should switch to the Ada Lovelace architecture, engraved in 5 nm. The information is now corroborated by DigiTimes, citing sources in the industry.

According to the specialized media, some Taiwanese founders, and in particular TSMC, the most important of all, are already preparing for the production of this new architecture in 2022. This tends to confirm that there should not be a generation “RTX 30xxx SUPER ”, as was the case in 2020.

This new architecture should notably allow the ADA102 GPU of the RTX 4090 to carry, according to rumors, 18,432 CUDA cores (against 10,496 for the RTX 3090 and 8704 for the RTX 3080) with a clock speed between 2.3 and 2.5 GHz. Some even mention a power of 85 to 92 TFLOPS (FP32), more than double the 36 TFLOPS (FP32) announced for the RTX 3090.

No MCA in 2022

Unlike the Hopper architecture, also using the nodes 5 nm from TSMC, or the RDNA3 architecture from AMD, RTX 40s with an Ada Lovelace GPU would not benefit from an MCM (Multi Chip Module) design. This design allows several GPU chips to work together, which are not necessarily identical. This not only offers more power, but also the ability to assemble chips with different etchings to reduce design costs. However, for this the technical part must be perfectly mastered.

Anyway, there is still time before we see the arrival of this new generation RTX 4000. As a reminder, the RTX 3080 was presented in September 2020.

The next graphics cards from Nvidia are starting slowly, but surely to be talked about.
