This year’s results, ranked eleventh, in the form of the Education First Language Proficiency Index (EPI) by Education First, a survey of English language proficiency in 112 countries where English is not the mother tongue. Participated in testing 2.2 million adults.

After a long stagnation, an increase has finally come

The level of English proficiency in Slovakia was marked as “high” thanks to 590 points of the EF EPI Index *. This means that in practice, the average Slovak should be able to prepare a professional working presentation in English, watch original television programs or read newspaper articles.

According to the Education First agency, Slovakia has ranked behind Poland, Hungary, Croatia and Romania, for example. The best results and a very high level of English were achieved by countries such as the Netherlands, Austria and Portugal. The Scandinavian countries, Germany, Croatia and Serbia can also boast excellent scores and knowledge. France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Ukraine, for example, finished behind Slovakia in the English test.

For the first time, men are better at language than women

For the first time since 2014, when the English language level was tested worldwide, years have shown that men speak English better than women. In almost all regions, the same trend is taking place: women’s English remains stable, while men’s English is improving. “It seems that the year marked by the pandemic and the time spent at the computer monitor were better used by men than women and worked harder to improve their English. and more interesting work, ” supplies Zuzana Ihnátová, Country Manager of the educational organization EF Education First in Slovakia.
