Police later found a used condom and cigarette paper in his car, which contained the DNA of both the perpetrator and the victim. The accused first claimed that he did not know Frew and that he was at work on the fateful day. Then he came up with a version about not noticing that Stella was sticking to his oncoming van. However, the evidence clearly spoke against him.

The poor family is crushed and cannot understand Martin’s actions. “We are absolutely broken. For him, our mother may have been nobody, but for us it meant absolutely everything. Our grief will never heal.” said Frew’s daughter, Frankie Cottrell. According to lawyer Jeremy Dein, his client suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. “He’s a decent man who killed Mrs. Frew in a few unfortunate seconds during his otherwise exemplary life,” argued in court. Martin eventually confessed to the charge of causing death by a dangerous ride, he denied the charge of killing. Judge Richard Marks of London sent him behind bars in four and a half years. He described his behavior as “cheap, cynical and contemptuous”.
