University, the ‘Center for sustainability’ is born in Palermo

UniPa, with its community of students and staff of almost 50 thousand units and its annual budget of the order of 300 million euros, has the responsibility and duty to contribute concretely to the issue of sustainability not only through training and research. , but also with energy, mobility and supply choices capable of reducing environmental impacts – declares the Rector, prof. Massimo Midiri – I am particularly proud that one of the first acts of the Board of Directors since the beginning of my rectoral mandate was the approval of the establishment of the Center for Sustainability, with the aim of becoming a catalyst for initiatives on these issues that they will be developed and declined in all their forms. The Center will be made up of a group of expert teachers in the sectors of the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) set out in the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which place the culture of sustainability in a completely new light and which will be addressed on the basis of an interdisciplinary and transversal approach, capable of crossing issues such as equal opportunities, access to education, the creation of democratic institutions. To contribute to the achievement of these objectives, our University will play a triple role: that of promoter, through the training of the younger generations, of proponent, through the results of research, and of actuator, becoming a pilot system of sustainability. Our University thus further strengthens its position as a reference point for the territory, as a study laboratory from which methodological working guidelines and new good practices in terms of sustainability will be disseminated. We can offer the territory concrete solutions through the development of sustainable and economically feasible systems and technologies. We are ready to make our knowledge on these major issues, fundamental for daily life and for our future, available to local authorities and stakeholders, and to intercept the trajectories that will be the cornerstones of a new society “.
