MediaTek has announced its new premium SoC, the Dimensity 9000. It is nothing more or less than the first chip with the new 4nm manufacturing process. And it already promises to shake up the market leaders, with many superlatives and high claims.

While it is often admitted that MediaTek SoCs are lagging behind their competitors (Qualcomm and its Snapdragraon 888, Samsung with its Exynos 2100 not to quote them), the Taiwanese company seems well decided to no longer play the rearguard this year.

MediaTek has just announced (via GSMArena) its next SoC, the Dimensity 9000. And it is neither more nor less than the first to benefit from the new process of the founder TSMC in 4 nm.

New ARM Architecture v9

In theory, an SoC engraved at 4nm should show better performance and greater energy efficiency. However, MediaTek has yet to announce figures regarding these theoretical gains. In addition to offering a new fineness of engraving, the Dimensity 9000 also benefits from ARM’s new v9 architecture, as underlined The Verge. Added to this is a Mali-G710 GPU with ten cores and a new APU (an accelerated computing unit that helps the processor) with 6 cores dedicated to processing by the AI. MediaTek announces that this APU should be four times more efficient and energy efficient than its predecessor. The Taiwanese manufacturer adds that in this AI field, its Dimensity 9000 would exceed the Google Tensor by 16%.

On the memory side, the Dimensity 9000 supports LPDDR5x RAM and has a 14 MB cache memory. The manufacturer claims that this cache memory should improve performance by 7% and bandwidth consumption by 25% compared to the previous model.

Progress in video and Bluetooth 5.3

The MediaTek Dimensity 9000 also marks the arrival of the new Bluetooth 5.3 standard, present for the first time on a smartphone chip. It also supports Wi-Fi 6E 2 × 2 and 5G, sub-6Ghz, once again passing its turn on the 5G millimeter.

The processing of images via the ISP is also experiencing significant improvement. The image processor supports sensors that can go up to 320 megapixels, which leaves ample room for future developments, since Samsung is currently communicating on a 200 megapixel sensor. For the video part, Dimensity explains that its SoC can run simultaneously with three cameras in 4K HDR. This would cause his ISP to process 270 frames per second. It could also offer 18-bit 4K HDR output and play 8K videos in AV1.

The first smartphones equipped with this chip should be marketed during the first quarter of 2022. By then, Qualcomm will have announced the successor to the Snapdragon 888 at its Tech Summit, which will take place from November 30 to December 2, 2021.
