A post on Twitter, shared more than 3,000 times, claims that, according to the latest figures from the Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (Drees), there are eleven times more vaccinated than unvaccinated in hospital in Pays de la Loire.

The tweet also presents a graph supposed to represent the number of hospitalizations according to the vaccination status of people. The figures of the DREES are here misinterpreted and the assertion is therefore false.

The Drees presents the regional data on the number of cases and hospitalizations by patient immunization status except this tweet shows gross daily hospital admissions. The problem with these numbers is that they fluctuate from day to day, as the graph shows, up and down.

Thus, on October 26, 2021, in the Pays de la Loire region, eleven vaccinated people entered the hospital on suspicion of Covid against an unvaccinated person, which corresponds to the figure presented in this tweet. By following this logic, we can also be interested in September 20, where six unvaccinated people entered the hospital on suspicion of Covid against any vaccinated.

To have the distribution of average admissions to the hospital for suspected Covid, according to the vaccination status of the patients, these figures must be smoothed over the last seven days. During the week of October 25 to 31, there are 76 admissions among the vaccinated against twenty among the unvaccinated. Which is 3.8 times more vaccinated than unvaccinated admitted to hospital and not eleven times more.

For these numbers to make sense and judge the effectiveness, or inefficiency, vaccination on hospitalizations, they must be related to the size of each population considered.
