The “fourth wave” of Covid-19 “hits us with all its strength”. This was stated today by Lothar Wieler, president of the Robert Koch Institut, who launched an invitation to the Germans to limit social contacts. The alarm concerns in particular some districts, where the increase in the number of cases has led clinics and in particular intensive care units to the limit of their capacity. Without taking additional measures to tackle the pandemic, the situation will become the same across Germany, he warned. Wieler also argued that there is a need to reduce the number of participants in large events or even to ban such events. The closure of bars or clubs in areas with high rates of contagion should also be considered while those who gather indoors for private meetings should undergo the test first, he concluded. NEW INFECTIONS – More than 4.9 million coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Germany since the outbreak of the pandemic, the Robert Koch Institut reported. In the last 24 hours, 48,640 infections have been confirmed, while 191 people have lost their lives due to complications. The total number of infected people is thus updated to 4,942,890 and to 97,389 that of the dead. Currently in Germany there are 395,300 active cases, about 30,900 more than yesterday. A meeting is scheduled for 18 November with the leaders of the various Laender to decide on the measures to be taken to contain the spread of the pandemic.
