Migrants, a thousand cross the Channel in 24 hours

About a thousand migrants crossed the English Channel on the last day, a record as explained by the BBC. The migrants were discarded from five lifeboats and four border force ships that escorted them to Dover. The calm and mild weather made the trip less risky, the broadcaster points out. The previous record was 853 people on November 3. More than 23,000 people made the crossing from France to the United Kingdom by boat this year. This is a sharp increase from 8,404 in 2020. Before the pandemic, most asylum seekers arrived by plane, ferry or train.
