BRATISLAVA. The law of a group of deputies around Anna Záborská (Christian Union), which complicated women’s access to abortions, did not pass.

134 deputies were present for the vote, and 67 deputies supported the proposal. One vote was missing for his approval.

38 deputies opposed the proposal, 28 abstained and one did not vote.

One voice was missing

“More deputies voted than a year ago,” says Záborská. “The result counts,” he said, adding that the topic of helping women is the topic of the day. “When we talk about helping the needy, we must not forget the group of women who are deciding at a critical moment whether to deliver a child or an abortion.”

Liberal wing OĽaNO is satisfied with the result of the vote. “Deputies are not identified with the introduction of new restrictions,” Kristián Čekovský said after the vote. Romana Tabak (OĽaNO) is also satisfied with the result, and if she submits a similar proposal, she says that she will not receive her vote even in the first reading. “I’m sure they don’t want help anymore,” she said.

The bill was supported by almost all OĽANO deputies, except for eight, and several abstained.

Lots of amendments

During Tuesday’s discussion, Jana Bittó Cigániková (SaS), Chair of the Health Committee, tabled twelve amendments, which contain 30 amendments.

The changes were also proposed by the liberal wing OĽaNO around Kristián Čekovský and Andrej Stančík. The amendment was also tabled by Jozef Hlinka (We are a family).

What the Záborská proposal was supposed to bring

The law was supposed to change the waiting period, from requesting an abortion, to a time when it could be done.
